Breast revision surgery is a procedure that addresses imperfections and complications that can develop following an initial breast augmentation. Sometimes women need breast revision surgery to correct medical issues that arise due to improper healing or significant trauma. Pregnancy, extreme weight fluctuations, and natural aging can also alter the aesthetic results of breast augmentation, which may lead to a displeasing breast appearance. Whether you seek breast revision for medical or cosmetic purposes, Dr. Mendieta possesses the expertise and experience to help enhance the look and feel of your breasts.
Before undergoing any surgical procedure, patients must be evaluated by a board-certified surgeon to ensure that they are in optimal health. Women age 18 or older may consider a breast revision procedure following their initial breast augmentation if they experience any of the following concerns:
- Capsular contracture
- Implant rupture
- Implant rippling
- Breast asymmetry
- Dissatisfaction with current breast implant size, type, or shape
- A desire to change the placement of the implants
Breast Revision Options
Every breast revision case requires individualized care. This outpatient procedure is performed using general anesthesia and can take between one and three hours to complete, depending on the techniques used. During your private consultation, Dr. Mendieta will analyze your condition and consider your expectations for the procedure before determining the most appropriate approach to reach your cosmetic goals.
Breast revision patients can opt to exchange their implants if they want implants of a different size, shape, or type. An implant exchange can also be performed in cases of implant rupture. Typically, Dr. Mendieta uses the same incisions that were used for the first breast procedure to avoid creating additional scarring.
Patients who are unhappy with their breast augmentation results may also choose to have their implants removed without replacing them. If you experience significant skin laxity or the implants that are being removed are large, it may be recommended that you combine your implant removal with breast lift surgery to achieve optimal results.
Some patients are dissatisfied with their breast implants as a result of where they were placed. Patients can choose between subglandular or subpectoral implant placement, and both options have benefits. For example, women who do not have enough breast tissue to conceal the edges of the implants may decide that subpectoral placement would give them a more pleasing breast profile.
After any breast augmentation, a layer of scar tissue forms a capsule around each of the implants. However, capsular contracture develops when the scar tissue becomes too thick and contracts one or both of the implants, distorting the bustline. A capsulectomy is the removal of the thickened capsule to improve the appearance of the breasts.
Most breast revision patients experience the bulk of fatigue and soreness during the first three days of recovery, after which the discomfort should subside. Swelling and bruising are also common, but these side effects tend to resolve within one month. While light activity is recommended to promote blood circulation and minimize swelling, patients must avoid heavy lifting and raising the arms up for a minimum of two weeks.
Patients must wait at least six to eight weeks before resuming their regular exercise regimen to help prevent postoperative complications and physical discomfort. Dr. Mendieta will give you a detailed recovery timeline during your consultation.
After breast revision surgery, it may take a few months for the breasts to take their final shape, and patients can expect a boost of self-confidence and satisfaction with their breasts. The results of this procedure are long lasting, but subsequent aging, gravity, weight fluctuations, and pregnancy can affect the appearance of the breasts.
