The nose is a very important central feature of the face. In both front and profile views, nasal characteristics affect the overall balance and aesthetic appeal of the entire face.

Rhinoplasty is one of the most exacting procedures in plastic surgery because very small changes can significantly alter the appearance. Careful evaluation, planning, and surgical precision are critically important. Overly operated noses appear unattractive and unnatural.

To preserve your individuality and maintain the uniqueness of your nose, Dr. Mendieta will spend a lot of time with you discussing your desires and explain how the changes you desire will affect other features of your nose and face. By changing only the negative features and carefully preserving your positive characteristics, your nose will blend more aesthetically with your face and not appear overly operated.

In general, features of the nose should blend in a pleasing fashion with other facial structures. Overly prominent regions of the nose such as a large hump or an excessively round or bulbous tip, detract from a pleasing balance and can be improved by Rhinoplasty.

What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, commonly referred to as a “nose job”, is a surgical procedure that reshapes, resizes, and/or restoring the functions of the nose.

Who is a candidate for Rhinoplasty?

A good candidate is someone who self-conscious with the size or shape of their nose, or want to restore the functions of their nose being post injury or due to a birth defect. In addition, you should be someone who is in good health and has realistic expectations for this procedure.

At what age can Rhinoplasty be performed?

Rhinoplasty can be performed on both teenagers and adults. It is important to consider important factors such as health, and if you are physically, emotionally, and mentally mature to move forward with this procedure. Teenagers should only have rhinoplasty surgery once their noses have reached their full size. Full physical growth is reached between 13 to 16 years of age and 15 to 18 years of age for boys.

Are there any limitations to what Rhinoplasty can achieve?

The nose is a unique structure with many pieces, and with that, there is a limit to how often and how safely recreating its size and shape can be done. There is also the limitation for how far the skin can stretch. You should choose a rhinoplasty surgeon with experience and full understanding of what is attainable given your particular case.

Where are the incisions made for Rhinoplasty?

There are two surgical approaches known as an “open rhinoplasty” and “closed rhinoplasty”. An open rhinoplasty is when an incision is made outside the skin. In this approach, a small incision is made on the columellar. A closed rhinoplasty is where all the incisions are made inside the nose, a way in which visible scarring is avoided. Regardless of the approach, a good surgeon should be able to place the incision where it is least visible after surgery.

  • How much does Rhinoplasty cost?

This is dependent on the geographical location, skill of the surgeon, and extent of the surgery. $3,000 to $12,000 with an average cost of $5,000.

  • What is the recovery time?

Recovery time after rhinoplasty is unique for every patient. Internal and external nasal sprints are removed after about a week. For most, swelling and bruising will subside quite a bit in 10 to 14 days, which is also when you can return to work or be seen in public. Full recovery can take between 9 to 12 months.

  • How long does a Rhinoplasty procedure take?

Rhinoplasty can take 1 to 2 hours on average, but can take up to 4 hours depending on the extent or complexity of the procedure, and the skill of your surgeon.

  • How long does Rhinoplasty last?

Rhinoplasty lasts for a lifetime. Of course with the naturally aging process your skin will thicken over time, so your nose will experience a slight change in size.

  • What are the risks involved with Rhinoplasty?

Risks include infections, bleeding, reaction to anesthesia, poor healing or scarring, difficulty breathing, change in skin sensation, swelling, skin discoloration, and displeasure with nasal appearance.

  • What should I do or take leading up to a Rhinoplasty procedure?

You should stop smoking and taking any aspirin, ibuprofen, and herbal supplements 2 weeks before surgery. Stock up on prescription medications, soft foods, and lip balm and cold beverages since your mouth will be dry from breathing through it. Arrange for someone to drive you after surgery and remain with you the first 24 hours for any assistance you may need during recovery.

  • What type of Anesthesia is used for Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty can be performed under IV sedation or general anesthesia. IV sedation anesthesia is preferred over general anesthesia as it is safer and provides a quicker recovery.

  • Can Rhinoplasty be combined with other procedures?

Rhinoplasty can be combined with other facial and body procedures. It is commonly combined with eyelid surgery, chin augmentation, and facial liposuction. Your surgeon should determine if you are in good health to do so.

  • Is there much pain with a Rhinoplasty?

This can depend on the type of rhinoplasty technique used during surgery and your own pain tolerance. You may experience aching and headaches for a short time following surgery. You will also experience congestion in the first few weeks, along with swelling and bruising on the nose and cheeks.

  • If I'm visiting from out-of-town, how long should I remain after surgery before departing?

Plan to remain for 7 to 10 days before traveling to allow enough time for a follow-up with your surgeon and avoid any potential complications with travel.

  • When can I begin exercising after the surgery?

Exercise and weightlifting increases blood pressure so you should avoid doing so for at least one month post surgery since patients are prone to nosebleeds and other complications during that time.

  • When will I be able to see results?

It can take up to a year to reach full healing and for you to see final results.
