What is Calf Augmentation?

Calf augmentation is an elective procedure that increases the size and improves the shape of one or both calves. Some patients have naturally thin or underdeveloped calf muscles that do not respond to muscle-building diet and exercise strategies. Others suffer from shrunken lower legs as a result of an injury or congenital condition. Fortunately, calf implants can restore a more attractive and balanced appearance to the legs. Dr. Constantino Mendieta performs calf augmentation with implants for patients who desire fuller and more sculpted lower legs.

How Is Calf Augmentation Performed?

All of Dr. Mendieta’s calf augmentation surgery procedures are performed at our plastic surgery center in Miami, Florida. First, an incision is created along the natural crease at the back of the knee. A pocket is formed between the fascia and the muscle of the treatment area, into which a solid silicone implant is carefully inserted. After the implant is in the desired position, the incisions are closed with sutures.

Depending on your cosmetic goals, calf implants may be placed in any of the following lower leg locations:

  • Medial (inner)
  • Lateral (outer)
  • Both medial and lateral

What Is My Recovery Like After Calf Augmentation?

During calf augmentation recovery, patients can expect some bruising and swelling in the first few days following their procedure. Postoperative discomfort can be alleviated with medication, as prescribed by Dr. Mendieta. Exparel injections will help to reduce pain during and after the procedure up to 80%. But this will be an additional cost and must be administered during the augmentation.

While strenuous activity must be avoided for several weeks, patients are encouraged to take short, easy walks to promote blood circulation and faster healing.

When Can I Exercise After Calf Augmentation?

You can begin walking normally between the second and third week of recovery, but you must refrain from engaging in intense workouts for at least four to six weeks. Ease into your usual exercise routine slowly, depending on your comfort level.

When Will I See My Calf Augmentation Results?

It may take up to eight weeks for the body to adjust to your calf augmentation. The shininess of the skin around the implants will dissipate, and the implants will settle. Calf augmentation with implants is a permanent enhancement procedure as long as you do not experience implant displacement or other complications.

Calf Augmentation FAQs

  • How much does calf augmentation cost?

The cost of calf augmentation depends on several factors, including the surgical techniques used, facility fees, anesthesia fees, and geographical location.

The exact cost of your calf augmentation procedure will be calculated and given to you during your private consultation. Financing for plastic surgery is available.

  • Will insurance cover my calf augmentation?

As calf augmentation is typically an elective surgery, most insurance providers do not cover the costs. However, if you are choosing a calf augmentation procedure to correct a lower leg defect from injury, disease, or birth conditions, you may receive coverage.

It is recommended you contact your insurance provider directly to get more information about your coverage.

  • Is calf augmentation right for me?

Individuals interested in calf augmentation surgery should be in good health with realistic expectations for their procedure. Additionally, patients should be willing to stop smoking, drinking, and taking specific prescriptions before and after their procedure.

When you book a consultation, your doctor will examine your medical records and health to determine if you qualify for and can benefit from the procedure.

  • Is calf augmentation only for men?

No, while most of the patients who receive this procedure are men, many women also choose to get calf augmentation.

  • Will I have to spend the night after surgery?

Typically, calf augmentation is performed on an outpatient basis. Patients should ensure they have a ride home and someone to monitor them the first 24 hours post-procedure.

  • Can I change my calf implant size after the procedure?

It can be quite challenging to go from a big calf implant to one that is smaller in size. This is because a calf implant pocket is established to fit your initial implant size. Your doctor will have extensive talks to help you choose a calf implant size that feels right for you.

If you are worried about sizing, it is recommended to go smaller initially. An upgrade to a bigger implant is easier than a switch to a smaller implant.

  • Can I continue to work out and build up muscle after calf augmentation surgery?

Yes, most patients find that they can get back to working out four to eight weeks after their procedure. Your calf augmentation will define your lower legs. You’ll be able to build up muscle and work out after this procedure.

  • How long do my calf implants last?

Calf augmentation is, for most people, a permanent surgery. In some rare cases, patients will need to get a revision calf augmentation if their implants have shifted or deteriorated or if the patient wants to swap out the size.

Significant weight gain can make the contour of the calf implant less visible.

  • What are the risks associated with calf augmentation?

It is uncommon to experience significant complications after calf augmentation. However, all surgeries come with risks, which may include:

    • Bleeding or hematoma
    • Infection
    • Changes in sensation
    • Visible scarring
    • Abnormal reaction to anesthesia
  • Will I have scarring after calf augmentation?

Dr. Mendieta meticulously places all calf augmentation incisions within the natural creases behind the knee. This is so that they are nearly imperceivable.

While the incisions are placed in inconspicuous locations, patients may develop visible scarring. Fortunately, most scars tend to fade over time.

  • What type of anesthesia is used during calf augmentation?

This procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia to ensure patient comfort and safety. It is crucial to have the anesthesia administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist for any major surgery.
