Causes and Symptoms of Rosacea

Rosacea is a difficult skin condition to manage, as the exact cause is not known, and there is no cure. It is believed that rosacea is caused by an abnormality of the blood vessels that causes redness of the skin. Individuals with fair skin and a family history of rosacea are at higher risk for this skin condition. The most common signs and symptoms of rosacea include:

  • Skin flushing or red patches on the face
  • Visible blood vessels on the face, especially the nose and cheeks
  • Swollen or inflamed skin – eyes may appear swollen and puffy
  • Skin is hot or tender
  • Pustules or pimples surrounded by reddish skin
  • Thickening skin, especially on the nose

Rosacea usually begins on the face, but it can spread to other areas of the body. Certain activities and substances can trigger rosacea episodes, including vigorous exercise, spicy foods, alcohol, hot temperatures and emotional stress.

What Types of Treatments Are Available for Rosacea?

Rosacea is not simply an aesthetic concern – it is a chronic skin disorder that can persist throughout your life. Treatments can include medications and topical creams that can help control breakouts and minimize skin irritation. Limiting triggers can help control the severity of rosacea and minimize aggravation of the blood vessels.

To reduce redness of the skin and shrink noticeable blood vessels on the face, laser treatments are beneficial. At 4Beauty Aesthetic Institute for Plastic Surgery, our medical spa and aesthetics team offer advanced laser and other skin treatments for rosacea. Our aestheticians can determine the best rosacea treatments to improve the appearance of the skin.

Is Laser Treatment for Rosacea Right for Me?

If you have red, blotchy skin or visible blood vessels caused by rosacea that are impacting your appearance, laser treatments may be a solution. Dr. Mendieta is a top plastic surgeon and his aesthetic team at 4Beauty Aesthetic Institute for Plastic Surgery offers cutting-edge skin treatments that can minimize the effects of rosacea. Most laser skin treatments are painless and can be performed in less than an hour at our medical spa in Miami.

There is minimal downtime or recovery needed after laser treatments. Depending on the type of laser treatment used, you may have increased redness or peeling after your procedure, but the skin will heal and improve over the following week. Depending on the severity of the rosacea, it may require multiple laser treatments to accomplish the desired results. Laser skin therapy can offer vastly improved aesthetics for patients with rosacea and long-lasting results.

Rosacea Treatment FAQs

  • How long do laser rosacea treatment results last?

Rosacea does not have a cure – it is a chronic skin condition that can last a lifetime. Laser skin treatments can improve the appearance of the skin up to 3-5 years or longer, but it does not prevent rosacea from coming back.

  • Is rhinophyma the same as rosacea?

Rhinophyma is a thickening of the skin on the nose, and it is related to rosacea. Laser skin treatments and skin resurfacing can reduce thickened skin on the nose to improve the appearance. In severe cases, rhinoplasty may be an option to reshape noses affected by rhinophyma.
