Miami Dr. Constantino Mendieta (M.D., F.A.C.S.) is a board-certified plastic surgeon who performs breast augmentation Miami procedures.

Although traditional incision options for breast augmentation leave scars in inconspicuous places on the breasts, many women are still concerned with scar visibility. An alternative to these more common techniques is the trans-umbilical breast augmentation (TUBA), which involves only one incision in the navel. The implant shell is inserted through the incision and is maneuvered through the subcutaneous fat toward the breast. Once it is situated, the implant is filled with a saline solution.

Since this technique does not involve any incisions on the breasts, they cannot be lifted. Patients who have sagging breasts should consider the breast lift procedure, or a combination of a breast augmentation and a breast lift.*

The implants for scarless breast augmentation are commonly placed under the chest muscle. Candidates who desire implants placed above the muscle must have enough breast tissue to cover the implant so a natural look is achieved.* Some surgeons may have differing opinions, but I recommend that patients have at least two centimeters of “pinch able” tissue in the upper chest area in order to place implants above the muscle. If there is not enough tissue present, a sharp demarcation line between the breast tissue and the implant could result.* This is why sub-muscular placement is recommended in most cases.

Breast Augmentation FAQs

What is a breast augmentation?

Breast Augmentation is a surgical procedure that aims to increase the size, shape, or fullness of the breast.

How much does a breast augmentation cost?

The cost of a Breast Augmentation will vary, depending on the needs and desired result of the patient.

What is the recovery time for a breast augmentation?

Pain usually subsides in one to five days, and you may have soreness and swelling for a few weeks.

How long will a breast augmentation procedure take?

Breast augmentation surgery can last from one to several hours depending on the procedure and personal circumstances.

What can I expect immediately following my breast augmentation surgery?

Pressure on your chest, discomfort in your chest each and every time you use your pectoral muscles. Moving your arms, getting out of the car, getting up from a chair or sofa, sneezing, coughing, heaving, reaching up to grab something from a cabinet, washing your hair.

How long does breast augmentation last?

Breast implants last approximately 10 years or should be replaced every eight to 10 years.

What incision site and placement are you recommending for me?

That will depend on the desired result of the patient and the current condition of their breasts.

What are the risks and complications associated with having breast augmentation?

That will depend on the patient but some common risks are: scar tissue that forms around the implant and squeezes the implant, breast pain, changes in nipple and breast sensation, rupture with or without symptoms (silent rupture).

Can I still get a breast augmentation if I have a strong family history of breast cancer?

Breast Implants do not increase cancer risk, and should not interfere with monitoring, either by self exam or imaging (mammograms). Mammographers tell us they prefer the submuscular (under the muscle) positioning of implants.

What (if any) secondary procedures associated with my breast augmentation will be required?

Breast implants last approximately 10 years or should be replaced every eight to 10 years.

What can I expect my breasts to look like over time?

There are changes that do naturally occur in the breasts over time with and without implants, like stretching and sagging of the skin.

How will my breasts look if I decide to have the implants removed and not replaced?

That will depend on several factors such as: the quality of skin elasticity (the better the elasticity the better the skin will bounce back), the size of the implants used (the larger the implant the more trouble you may have with redundant skin), and the amount of breast tissue present at this time (which may have changed since the time of your breast augmentation).

What will my breasts look like after pregnancy if I have an augmentation? After breastfeeding?

Pregnancy will have no effect on the integrity of your implants. The stretching and shrinking of the breast tissue during pregnancy and breast feeding may cause changes that could require some future surgery like bigger implants or a lift may be in your future. Breasts change during pregnancy regardless of implants.

Will breast implants affect my ability to breastfeed a baby?

If you could nurse before, you should be able to nurse after breast augmentation.

What are my options if I am dissatisfied with the outcome of my breast augmentation?

A revision surgery may be performed to change the position of the implant, or the implants can be removed.

Can I still get mammograms with breast implants in place?

Yes you can still get mammograms after breast augmentation.
