The world of plastic surgery is becoming more popular every year. In fact, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) reported that women had more than 9.1 million cosmetic procedures performed last year and men underwent close to 1 million cosmetic procedures. According to ASAPS, here are some of the most popular plastic surgery procedures of 2012:
1.) Breast augmentation: The leading plastic surgery procedure in 2012 was breast augmentation (“mammoplasty”), as more women wanted to achieve a larger bust line. According to the ASAPS, more than 330,000 breast augmentations were performed in 2012 alone!
2.) Liposuction: Another highly requested procedure is liposuction (“lipoplasty”). More than 313,000 liposuction procedures were performed in 2012, making this the second most popular plastic surgery procedure. According to ASAPS, liposuction was the most popular plastic surgery procedure for men and the second most popular plastic surgery procedure for women.
3.) Eyelid surgery: This procedure, also called “blepharoplasty,” entails the removal of wrinkles and sagging skin on the upper and/or lower eyelids and was one of the top five most popular procedures in 2012. According to ASAPS, there were 153,171 blepharoplasty procedures performed in 2012. Eyelid surgery was in the top five plastic surgery procedures performed on both men and women.
4.) Abdominoplasty: 156,508 “tummy tucks” were performed in 2012, making it one of the top five plastic surgery procedures for women.
5.) Rhinoplasty: “Nose jobs” remained as one of the top five plastic surgery procedures, with 143,801 performed last year alone. Rhinoplasty was the second most popular plastic surgery procedure for men in 2012.
6.) Breast lift: Breast lift surgery (“mastopexy”) was one of the top five plastic surgery procedures for women in 2012, with 127,776 performed. This procedure is commonly performed with breast augmentation, tummy tuck, and liposuction during a “Mommy Makeover.”
7.) Otoplasty: In 2012, otoplasty (ear surgery) increased in popularity. Many parents have children who qualify for ear surgery, which can help them avoid being continuously teased about their protruding ears by their peers. In addition, ASAPS reported that ear shaping surgery was one of the top five surgical plastic surgery procedures performed on men in 2012.
8.) Gynecomastia: As more males are acknowledging that they are self-conscious about the size of their chest area, the number of men undergoing male breast reduction surgery is increasing. ASAPS reported that gynecomastia (breast reduction surgery) was one of the top five plastic surgery procedures for men in 2012, with close to 23,000 men who underwent this procedure last year.
Other popular plastic surgery procedures in 2012 included facelifts, arm lifts, and thigh lifts. Popular non-invasive procedures performed in 2012 were Botox® injections, dermal fillers (hyaluronic acid), laser hair removal, chemical peels, and microdermabrasion.
